Owners comments why "Dream On" Stands Above the Fleet of other Manta 44 PowercatsOf the 16 Manta Power Cats that were built, let me enlighten you as to why this Manta #15 far above the others. The owner worked closely with the owners of Manta and decided that they would build this Catamaran unlike any of the previous ones with no expenses spared. That is to say while #15 is built on the floor plan of other Manta's, it is essentially a custom-built boat.
Major Differences in Power Cat #15 and the rest of the fleet begins with the construction of the hulls. This was the first and only Manta to have the hulls vacuum packed when applying the resin to the fiberglass. This has two advantages. First, the fiberglass to resin ratio of two parts resin to one part fiberglass is totally reversed to one part resin to two parts fiberglass. This not only strengthens the glass but at the same time, decreases the weight.
In further, this cat has two Kevlar reinforced stringers connecting the two hulls while the other cats previous to #15 have none. Why is this important because it keeps the floors from moving and the impact of the deck of the construction which keeps the windows from breaking.
Additionally, this was the only Manta to have solid fiberglass window frames in the salon. The windows themselves ere made with 3/8 inch glass rather than the quarter inch glass in the previous Mantas. And the louvers are solid fiberglass while the others are made with foam.
What enticed the owner about the boat, having owned a half a dozen boats prior, was the way that the undercarriage is constructed. The propellers and rudder are completely protected by a semi-tunnel and stainless steel three-quarter inch thick by 4 inch wide bar. The other attractions were the engine rooms. A person can easily get to either engine and work on either side them and they are separate from the living quarters some there is never any exhaust or diesel smell inside the boat. Then there are the engines themselves. All previous Mantas are equipped with Volvo diesels. The owner had heard that the factory had taken out another prospective purchaser as well as the Volvo representatives. On the way out, starboard engine quit so they turn around and headed back to port when the other engine quit. That was enough for the owner! He heard about Yanmar engines, that they were the Rolex's of the engine world. He asked if he couldn't put these in instead of the Volvos. He was told that there was no way to do that. So, he had the crew from Mastery Motor come down from St. Petersburg to survey the situation. Thankfully, our adopted marine mechanic, Diego, was there and when the powers that be said that there should be no problem with it, the construction manager argued that they just couldn't see how it could be done. That was when Diego spoke up and said, "I can do that with no problem." Again, there was considerable additional expense to add these beautiful engines. Not only that but when we made The Great Circle Loop, Mastery Motors called saying they wanted to update our engines. The owner was overwhelmed! Bother engines were removed, taken to Tampa and completely overhauled with new parts and a new cooling assembly, reinstalled in the boat for absolutely no charge!
While we are talking about engines, the generator engine was much too small to carry the electrical load of all the things that are used o the boat at the same time. And it was very loud. When overnight at a dock, we were frequently asked to turn off our generator because it was keeping the other boaters awake. Once again I called Master Motors to see if they didn't have a better idea. Yes, they did and they would give me a good deal on a bigger one for only $8,000.00. The only problem was that they would not be able to get it in the hole where the other generator was installed. "not a problem," Diego said. So we set about doing two things. First, we laid a floor mat that was two inches thick for the generator to sit on. Then the entire generator room was insulted with 1 and 1/2 thick insulation. Then Diego went to work and virtually disassembled nearly the entire engine, put it in the hole and re-assembled it. Now, if you are not careful, you can leave the boat not realizing that the generator is still running!!
There are so many other things that have been done to this boat which we will point out during your inspections. Things such as the stainless steel anchor chairs on each of the anchors. 160 feet on the lunch anchor and 200 feet on the main anchor. These have never been brought in that they weren't washed down with freshwater.
