Owner Overview of FORTUITOUS
Fortuitous, our 1979 Islander Freeport 41, is part of our family and has been with us since 1999. We bought her in order to head offshore once we retired. She had been kept in fresh water, in Lake Union Seattle, for all of her life up until that time. She was used mostly as an entertainment venue until we bought her, and had only been out on a salt water voyage a couple of times. Everything, inside and out, was in perfect condition because the previous owner had not used her much, but maintained her beautifully. We’d read a lot about what an excellent boat the Islander Freeport was, so buying her was an easy decision. We wanted a dependable, comfortable, strong, and sea kindly boat. We used her to travel in the local waters of British Columbia and then readied her for our offshore adventure. We added new standing rigging, radar and navigation electronics, HAM/SS band radio, Ram mike VHF in the main cabin as well as the main radio, new refrigeration, cutter rigging with storm sail, lazy jacks, storm windows & doors, a fully enclosed and screened bimini, a Little Wonder water-maker, extra anchors, life raft, solar panels, davits, dual fuel filters, BBQ, ditch and medical bags, and the list goes on.
Fortuitous took us down the west coast of the USA, and into Mexican waters. We spent a wonderful year in the Baja and then headed farther south. Here we added davits, and solid railings aft (instead of lifelines), a new dinghy and motor. We stopped along the way in Mexico, El Salvador, and Costa Rica, and headed to Ecuador to avoid the hurricane season. From Ecuador, we headed back to Panama for touring, then through the Panama Canal, down through the San Blas Islands of Panama, and on to Cartagena Colombia. We had originally planned to go west to the South Pacific, but decided to head into the Caribbean since we were so close. Through the canal, we had our sons and wives aboard and there was plenty of room for us all. Having two separate cabins, fore and aft, along with two heads makes Fortuitous much more comfortable than most sailboats.
Along the way, we met another Islander Freeport owner we’d cruised with many times. They’d had a facelift on their Islander Freeport and we decided to do the same with Fortuitous. So, in Cartagena we had a total gelcoat, topsides and hull, changed the cockpit arrangement to eliminate the never used aft entrance and allow up to 8 people to sit comfortably, new stainless lifelines, new upholstery in the salon and cockpit cushions, complete with new foam (as well as all new foam mattresses), a new larger propane locker and deck box, and varnished everything below and topsides. What a beauty!
After the facelift, we headed through San Andres, and Providencia to Roatan Honduras, then on to the Rio Dulce, Guatemala to weather the hurricane season. After several seasons there, cruising Honduras, Belize, and the Yucatan, Mexico, we headed to Key West and on up to Jacksonville Florida, where she is currently located.
These adventures and experiences have had such a positive influence on our lives. We’ve experienced so many different cultures, wondered at the diversity of sea life, and enjoyed anchorages and places you can only get to by cruising. Fortuitous has carried us safely and comfortably through all these experiences. We have continually maintained and upgraded her and you couldn’t ask for a more dependable, comfortable, and sea kindly boat. Fortuitous is ready to take you on an adventure…all systems are go!
