Calienteââ¬Â¦. History "The first owner was a J-Boat yacht broker. He commissioned the boat, outfitted it completely for coastal cruising and cruised it for a long summer in Maine. He had, and still has, a close connection with the Johnstones and made sure that all of the outfitting details were perfect. He and his wife along with their two young daughters were planning a multi-month trip from Maine to the Caribbean and back. They determined a larger J boat with two heads would better fit their needs and subsequently sold the boat.
The second owner lived in South Dartmouth, MA. The boat was successfully raced in Phrf class and was extremely well cared for and professionally prepared each year for the next successful season.
The third owner bought the boat in 2003. He and his wife would launch the boat each season and cruise for a 6-8 week block ranging from Nantucket to Mt Desert. Then, when cruising time ended, they would put the boat on the hard for the balance of the season and the winter at Royal River Marine. Royal River did all of the maintenance on the boat.
We purchased the boat in January of 2008. My wife and I cruised the boat and participated in Camden Yacht club races. She is easily single or double handed. We raced her in the Camden Yacht Club Phrf Series and the King of Spain Race series. My wife and I, doublehanded, won the King of Spain race this year competing against serious racers in a J46, custom 37 and J40. We also placed 1st and 2nd in Phrf races against a very competitive club fleet. She is a fierce competitor in the 3-8kts of true wind, especially up wind and is solid performer as the wind increases. Win Fowler of Maine Sailing Partners has created an excellent set of technical sails for both cruising and casual racing.
The boat handles like a dream. My wife describes her as having ââ¬Ågood mannersââ¬ï¿½ ââ¬â feather touch to the wheel, stiff, fast but predictable and stable. She can almost turn in her own boat length and backs straight as an arrow. She can motor easily at 6-6.5kts burning less than .5gph. We always receive complements in harbors and anchorages as to her beauty and grace. In addition to extensively cruising Downeast Maine, we have sailed her to Grand Manan, St. Andrews and ports along eastern Nova Scotia. The boat is an exceptionally sweet cruiser. We have entertained 17 guests in her cockpit on club cruises and with her speed, are often first to prime anchorages. She has gracefully tickled the delight of our grandkids and family on day sails, overnights and extended cruises. We will miss herââ¬Â¦.
We had no plans to sell her. The sole motivation to sell is our desire for a slightly larger J-Boat to handle our growing local family. Two of our sons and their families, who love to sail, have just moved to Camden. Our third son visits each year for two weeks with his family and enjoys cruising the coast as well.
Caliente will not disappoint." ~ Current Owner Caliente
