The Tartan 34 is a true Sparkman & Stephens designed classic. From 1967 to 1978, 525 hulls were produced and the design is so popular that hundreds are still in operation. In 1968, she won her class in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit and then again in the Port Huron-Mackinac Race, followed by the Marblehead-Halifax Race. And to this day they still are winning in club competitions all over!

Along with Olin and Rod Stephens, the deck was developed by Gerhard Gilgenast, German Frers Jr. and Francis Kinney. Production came to an end when the factory burned down and molds were destroyed. This led to the newly organized Tartan Marine where production resumed. The 34 cruising prowess was realized as the design has been sailed single-handed around the world, across the Pacific to Hawaii and around the Horn of South Africa, not to mention numerous passage making to this day.

Today she is considered to be a moderately heavy keel-centerboard sloop with graceful overhangs, wide side decks, a long 8‘ cockpit and moderate sail plan. Olin Stephens referred to her as a "masterpiece, as nothing outstanding or unusual about it, but everything seems to just work well". She sleeps up to six in a cabin trimmed in teak with 6'2" headroom. The galley is starboard of the companionway with good storage and on board refrigeration. There is a nav station to port, forward of the quarter berth. The port settee will open to a double, starboard settee is a single with good storage above both. The beautiful varnished table drops down from the bulkhead stowage. There are storage shelves above the V-berth with access to the anchor locker forward. She is very easy to single hand as the jib sheet winches and mainsheet are positioned near the helm.

Dancing Feather's hull and deck have been fiberglassed together on this Tartan 34. Not like the builder left it. The hull and deck were actually separated and cleaned before reassembly with 3M 5200 and then mated together and fiberglassed with two layers of 1708 biaxial cloth and two layers of 7oz woven roving cloth.

There are stainless steel backing plates under all deck hardware, including the traveler and centerboard winch.

The hull and deck, including the mast, were prepped and painted professionally in 2008. The rudder and centerboard were both also removed, shaped, faired and painted. The bottom was sand blasted and water barrier coated and painted in 2011.

As one of Tartan's most popular S & S designs, she has excellent sailing qualities with her world-renowned Tartan construction, traditional sea going interior layout, and keel/centerboard configuration. What makes Dancing Feather so special are the numerous updates - 2000 Yanmar Diesel, Electric Anchor Windlass, Harken Deck Hardware, Lewmar self-tailing winches. The list goes on and on so you will have to see this one for yourself...!! She really is Bristol!
