Accommodations
The interior of the Island Packet 38 is highlighted by a molded, textured, fiberglass pan appointed by varnished teak veneer bulkheads, solid teak trim and a teak and holly sole. The cabin has a unique layout with large forward and aft staterooms and a spacious central saloon, each with private access to an adjoining head with shower. The forward stateroom, with its private head, has an exceptional open layout, and is outfitted for extended periods aboard. The spacious main saloon features large facing settees with a pullout double berth under the starboard settee. The adjacent navigation station has the master electrical/instrumentation panel directly outboard. The roomy aft stateroom, while similar to the forward cabin, features a large queen berth with private access to an adjoining head.
All salon cushions have been re-upholstered using a designer fabric over a high-grade foam core. The aft and forward cabins were fitted with custom high quality mattresses composed of a top layer of memory foam with an innerspring bottom. This composite allows the mattress to be folded to gain easy access to storage without damaging the innersprings.
There is 6'4" headroom throughout most of the cabin, and there are a substantial number of opening ports and hatches to provide excellent lighting and ventilation. "WindSpirit" can sleep and cruise six (6) adults comfortably.

Electronics & CommunicationsTwo key features that makes "WindSpirit" an exceptional offshore vessel are the integrated navigation system, and the comprehensive communication network. The former is housed at the helm, and links radar, autopilot, and GPS via displays and a common network between Garmin and Raymarine instruments. The communication network is built around a PACTOR-IIe radio modem with a level III software upgrade. This device links the single sideband radio (SSB) and tuner to the vessel's personal computer (PC not included with purchase of vessel); thus, allowing access to email (SailMail), faxing, on-line weather, etc. (subscription needed). The antenna for the SSB, which is an insulated backstay, has been routed to the tuner via an inverted V connection. This installation method provides superior reception, and allows the tuner to be located in the communication center. A detailed listing of on-board electronics is as follows:
- Garmin 2010C (2008) multi-display (chartplotter/GPS/depth/autohelm) with Blue Charts (Florida/Bahamas, South Bahamas, Charleston/Jacksonville, Southwest Caribbean, Chesapeake/Delaware, Norfolk/Charleston, New York, Belize, Honduras, Mexico)

Rigging and SailsRigging
"WindSpirit" is a true cutter. Her mast is set far enough back to create sufficient room in the foretriangle to carry two headsails. The Isomat mast, which was un-stepped and re-wired in 2003, is of a single aluminum alloy with single foil spreaders, and is keel stepped. The standing rigging, which was replaced and upgraded in 2003 by Mack Sails, is 1x19 stainless steel cable with Staylock end fittings and open turnbuckles. The standing rigging is inclusive of: a headstay and forestay both equipped with ProFurl furling systems; middle, lower and upper shrouds; twin backstays with the starboard stay insulated for the SSB antenna; and a Navtec SS rod bobstay attached to an integrated bowsprit with teak decking. The boom is equipped with a ProFurl MK2512 in-boom (open-top), mainsail furling system, which employs an articulating rod extrusion fixed to the mast allowing the mainsail to form a flat airfoil without sag. This system also utilizes a rigid vang with a wire limiter to maintain a proper furling angle, and a Dutchman Boom Brake to control boom movement. An expandable whisker pole is mounted forward on the mast, and there is one (1) Lewmar #16-ST and one (1) Lewmar #7 mounted to port of the mast. All running rigging runs aft to the cockpit, and was replaced in 2006.
Sails
"WindSpirit" carries approximately 735 square feet of working sail inclusive of: a full battened mainsail specifically designed for the ProFurl in-boom furler; 120% roller furling genoa; 100% roller furling staysail (Mack Sails) with clubfoot boom; Gennaker with sock; All sails are in good condition and were professionally cleaned and batten pockets reinforced in 2012. Recently inspected (2014) and minor stitching repaired.
Deck & CockpitDeck
The deck of the Island Packet 38 was designed with simplicity, safety and strength in mind. Movement forward from the cockpit is unobstructed as the chainplates are mounted outboard, the walkways are wide with molded-in non-skid, and there are bulwarks developing forward of amidships. At the bow there is a fully integrated bowsprit with dual anchor rollers, anchors, electric windlass, dual hawse pipes, and a full-length double stainless steel (SS) bow pulpit. Running port and starboard outboard on deck is a teak capped gunwale with SS stanchions and double lifelines with gates. Attached to these lifelines are deck boards whereby eight (8) diesel and two (2) gas containers can be affixed for extended cruising. Also on the gunwale are two (2) eight foot genoa tracks port and starboard with adjustable fairleads. The main is sheeted to a mid-boom traveler with adjustable cars. The traveler is mounted forward of the dodger with all lines running back to the cockpit. The cabin top has molded-in non-skid with grab rails running fore and aft. There are thirteen (13) aluminum opening ports, and five (5) opening hatches for excellent ventilation.
Cockpit
The cockpit is large and ergonomically design to accommodate six (6) adults. There is a custom, aluminum tubular structure (built by Alloy Marine Products in 2001) that encompasses the cockpit and includes an integrated arch, dinghy davits with winches, and an outboard engine lift. Attached to this structure is a custom hard-top with an aft overhead opening hatch above the helm. The cockpit is fully enclosed with a dodger forward, and heavy-duty Isinglass zippered-in side curtains with screens. The cockpit itself has: a high bridge; double SS stern pulpit with a SS swim latter and teak steps; LifeSling; ring buoy w/light; full cockpit cushions; a shallow lazarette to port; a built-in icebox to starboard with a deep lazarette aft (allowing easy access to the genset); manual bilge pump; hot/cold pressure shower; and two (2) thirty (30) amp shorepower connections. The helm has wheel steering with rack and pinion direct drive. Forward of the helm there is a pedestal with a binnacle compass and instrument pods. Immediately to starboard are the engine controls and a VHF radio. The transom has a custom teak platform to facilitate boarding. Other equipment mounted in the cockpit includes:
- Andersen Electric #40 ST SS halyard winch cabin top mounted (starboard)
- Lewmar #7 staysail sheet winch cabin top mounted (port)
- Two (2) Lewmar #48 ST 2-spd. genoa winches (1986) coaming mounted P/S

ConstructionThe hull of the Island Packet 38 is molded as a single unit of fiberglass laminate consisting of alternate layers of hand laid mat with triaxial roving saturated with polyester resin. The exterior of all molded fiberglass parts is treated with a premium ISO/ORTHO/NPG type gel coating which has superior gloss and color retention, and maxim resistance to osmotic blistering. The entire deck, cabin and cockpit is also molded as a single unit utilizing the company's "Polycel" material as a core sandwiched between hand laid fiberglass and alternate layers of mat and roving. A non-skid texture is molded in during lay-up which, when coupled with the cored composite, provides an exceptionally strong deck. The interior is constructed around a molded fiberglass structural pan that is unified with the hull to produce a very strong, rigid unit. All bulkheads and furniture are molded into a grid system then bonded to the hull using fiberglass laminates of woven roving and mat. The hull to deck joint is an inward flange sealed with urethane adhesive then through bolded using SS bolts and aircraft type locking nuts. All chainplates are secured outboard through the teak cap rail and then anchored using a combination of fiberglass bonding and an interlocking assembly.
