Accommodations and layout

Simplicity is the key to the Hoyt designed Freedom 32. With uncluttered decks, minimal deck clutter, and a large cockpit the Freedom 32 has a pleasing and functional open layout. Wheel and pedestal well aft with a raised curved helmseat. Locker to starboard. A serious bridgedeck and companionway leads below, opening to the Freedom 32's spacious living accommodations. Adjacent to companionway to port is fully equipped sea going galley, to starboard is over-sized navigational desk and area (chart table, three drawers and locker). In the port quarter abaft the galley is the after cabin with large berth, hanging locker, opening port and  reasonable headroom. The after cabin also has a opening portlight into the cockpit Private shower and manual Jabsco head with plastic holding tank is aft of the nav. station to starboard. 

The main saloon features a  large  half moon shaped dinette area. The oval table drops to make a large berth. Stowage below seating, shelf above and cabinets and outboard. To starboard is a 6'6" long settee (also a good sea berth on a port tack) with ample stowage below and behind, bookshelves above. Ambient light provided by fixed ports, overhead opening hatch. Additional stowage under companionway stairs. All cabinets are cane-faced for ventilation and pleasing aesthetics. Headroom: 6'2"

The forward cabin has a 6'6" large double berth with storage below. A hanging locker is located to port. Sliding door for privacy. Upholstery is royal blue. Teak and holly cabin sole and oiled teak interior finish.

The Freedom 32 has an unstayed carbon fiber mast, aluminium boom. This boat is easy to single-hand, and a fine boat for a couple. The carbon mast reduces weight aloft adding to this fine yacht's stability.

Easy sail handling. To tack: Turn wheel, come thru the wind, fill the sails and carry on. Being without a backstay means the working main can have a large roach. The jib includes a flexible batten that maintains good sail shape. The spinnaker is controlled by a "gun mount" pole, an innovative design by Garry Hoyt, designed to facilitate a two person launching, control, and dousing. The in-boom reefing system allows easy reefing without leaving the cockpit. Combined with the pair of Barient self-tailing winches make sail handling a joy.

Built by Tiliotson Pearson International (TPI). Designed by Gary Hoyt. Solid respected, well above average construction that has stood the test of time. Hull is handlaid up fiberglass with a balsa core creating a very strong yet light hull. TPI was a pioneer in composite construction, and used vinylester resins in the outer laminate. Decks are also balsa cored. The yacht is light enough to be easily driven yet solid enough to take a seaway and the challenge of bluewater. The hull shape is beamy, however the hull narrows at the waterline, with a low wetted surface area. Fin keel, with 6'2" draught. Lead ballast. The tapered carbon fiber mast is stepped on the keel. Another advantage of the lack of rigging shrouds is that there are no chain plates to maintain. Non skid decks. Fiberglass rudder with stainless steel post. Bulkheads are marine plywood with oiled teak veneer, bonded to the hull.

The Freedom 32 design has stood the test of time: The free standing mast, quality build, and well conceived, clever design remain well appreciated. An easy boat to handle that has proven to be a tried and trusted bluewater cruiser, as well as a yacht to spend the afternoon reaching nicely at 6 knots plus out on the bay, to return later in the evening glow and achieve the mooring with a lazy, gentle but nimble tack.
