During '93 and '95, this limited series 36' Monk Trawler Yacht was one of few built in Nova Scotia where skilled boat builders continue their proud tradition of building boats having outstanding seaworthiness while utilzing exceptional building techniques.
Prior to '93 the Monk 36's were built in Asia where teak decks, trim, window frames, eyebrows and other wood trim were standard. With "Derreen", major exterior changes were made including white powder coated aluminum window frames, heavier s/s rails and stanchions, s/s opening ports, and a comfortable beige non skid surface on all deck areas in lieu of teak decks. Also, the interiors underwent a beautiful upgrade. Instead of plywood paneling that can delaminate with age particularly in wet and humid environments, custom milled and satin finished solid teak tongue and groove vertical staving was installed on the walls and bulkheads along with high quality teak furniture joinery that became a hallmark of this new 36 Monk Trawler Yacht from Canada.
Also, more upgrades became standard such as marble vanity tops and a tiled shower stall while for the “Derreen” special custom yet functional features designed and built by John Hollenbach* were added throughout the yacht.
Her Perkins 135hp engine drives “Derreen” at an economical 7.8 knots while only sipping 1gph. Below, the illuminated engine room is easily accessible, spacious, well organized, clean and bright.
Safety on deck also became more evident with heavier high quality North American stainless steel rails and stanchions.
While the layout and hull are basically the same design as other Monk 36 trawlers, without question "Derreen" stands apart from the rest as one of the limited edition Monk 36 “Trawler Yachts” to possibly consider. Come visit the “Derreen” and see the difference.
Accommodations Accommodations-Layout-Interior Features From forward moving aft, the V cabin has an ensuite head to port with toilet, shower, mirrored marble topped vanity and single berths on either side that comfortably sleep two. To starboard, a large hanging locker provides generous amounts of closet space and storage while shelves surround the outboard sides and additional storage under the berths. Moving aft and up three steps to the salon, the lower helm is to starboard with a side door access to the weatherdeck while behind is the full length "L" shaped galley. The galley affords plenty of extra countertop with a custom extension that drops down when not in use. Additionally, a custom built teak wall mounted dinnerware rack provides handy storage as well as a dry locker for cooking utensils. A custom teak spice rack is mounted above the propane stove/oven along side the stand-up refrigerator/freezer. Opposite to port in the salon a second side door provides access to the port weatherdeck. The "L" shaped salon settee with a drop-down/flip out table will seat four easily and will also convert the settee to sleep two when needed. Moving aft and down three steps, the companionway quickly gives way to a large, improved, and a very spacious and commodious Master's cabin with a centerline queen berth moved forward from the aft bulkhead...another feature not found on Monk 36's that were built in Asia. This change along with other updated construction details provides more spacious and comfortable accommodations along with increasing the function and usefulness of built-ins such as vanities, pull out drawers while under there are large lower storage lockers surrounding the cabin. Further, the master's cabin has a large private head compartment also with a mirrored blue marble topped vanity, toilet, and a large tiled walk in shower. In addition to the custom teak racks in the galley, one can't help but notice the custom book shelves in the aft cabin which may be utilized in an emergency to climb through the overhead hatch. The solid teak joinery is nicely finished and well thought out with simplicity and functionality in mind. This Nova Scotia Monk Trawler Yacht has vertical satin finished solid teak tongue and groove staving on the walls and bulkheads which provides a rich and warm feeling of comfort and spaciousness while generous amounts of ventilation and light from the redesigned and improved sliding glass windows and aluminum hatches minimize maintenance and ensure against water leaks. |
Salon & Galley The "L" shaped galley is up to starboard and aft of the lower helm. Opposite the galley to port is a large "L" shaped settee with slider windows behind and a fold-out drop down table that may be used for either dining for 4-6 or when dropped down can serve as a double berth. Hull - Deck - Rigging Hull - Deck - Rigging The hull provides a wide flare with high bulwarks forward to ensure a “dry ride” while the weatherdecks are wide with heavy hand rails and s/s stanchions. The bridge deck is easily accessible from the stern with steps inset in the house corners. Cushioned seating and deck space for chairs and storage for extra gear is more than adequate with numerous lockers . The bridge provides excellent visibility with comfortable newer cushioned seating shade with a blue bimini.
