***Broker's Comments
Tula was purchased by the current owner knowing that the boat needed work. She was behind the previous owners house. The boat was brought from the East Coast of Florida to St Petersburg where Chad Shakespear owner of Embree Marine performed an extensive refit. (see link to work invoice) The current owner had no intent to spend the kind of money outlined in this listing and not use the boat, but his dream was not his wifes dream, and the reality of a job with a busy travel schedule made owning a cruising sailboat unrealistic. So, after spending over $70,000 getting Tula ready to go cruising, the boat was placed on the market a little over a year ago.
There was one survey performed on this boat, and after talking with the selling broker and the surveyor two points stood out as concerns that caused the survey to be cancelled on the sea trial. The surveyor found that there was a high water line just under the sole that was not disclosed. Also in heavy air on starboard tack water leaked out from around the teak trim in the aft stateroom hatch coming from between the deck and the headliner. Knowing the construction of these boats that should not have been a deal breaker, but coupled with the non-disclosed high water skim line the potential buyer passed on the boat.
I also sat down with Chad at Embree and went over the extensive invoice. The forward holding tank still needs to be replaced. The cost will be around $7,000. Adding a compost head would be a viable alternative to replacing the tank. According to Chad there was no water over the engine, and there was a scum line on the bottom of the trans. As you can see from the invoice, the engine, trans, and shaft were taken out and reconditioned. Chad is available to answer any questions that you might have. Call me, and Ill put you in touch with him.
Conclusion
Tula is located on our Upland Dock at our St Pete office on Salt Creek. She is easy to view, and you can walk next door to Embree Marine if you have any additional questions. Chad has worked on quiet a few of these boats and has a good feel for what it costs to replace tanks etc. I have had a chance to look at her with a critical eye. No doubt there was high water just below the sole, but when you look at the extensive punch list addressed by Embree Marine there should be no cause for concern. The owner has priced her very fairly with offers encouraged. In addition, he has included the dinghy and motor not on any previous listing. This is a safe, solid, boat that will take you anywhere in the world that you have the skill and courage to go. Feel free to give me a call at 727-642-9022 if you need any further clarification.
