SABRE 30 - SPIRIT:
The Sabre 30 offers good value, style, and longevity: The Sabre 30 design was introduced in 1979 to fill the market gap between Sabre's very successful 28-foot and 34-foot models. The Sabre 30 is classified as a ââ?¬Å?performance cruiser" though she makes no real pretense of being a race boat or even a racer/cruiser. Her performance is quite acceptable as a cruiser and even club racer under the PHRF handicap system. The initial Sabre 30 design's overall length was 29 feet and 11 inches. This suggests some consideration was given to world of competition: as the length was kept to the limit of the MORC rating rule... If you ever wonder why many 30-footers of the 1970s and 1980s were actually 29 feet and 11 inches, thatââ?¬â?¢s your answer.Ã?Â
SPIRIT is the sought after/ most recent Mk III version; Sabre increased to LOA of this final redesign to 30 feet and seven inches and increased her beam from 10 feet to 10 feet and six inches. This retooling resulted in a slight increase in ballast weight. In the traditional method of quality fiberglass production,Ã? Sabre 30 hulls were hand-laminated, utilizing alternating layers of chopped strand mat and woven fiberglass cloth set in polyester resin. The deck and cabin structure use balsa wood core for stiffness and weight reduction. The two are joined on an inward hull flange with mechanical fasteners and sealant. Very little use was made of fiberglass liners for internal components resulting in quite good accessibility for inspection.Ã?Â
SPIRIT shines with white topsides and a classic blue bottom and navy blue boot stripe. She brightwork was wooded and all exterior varnish was re-done two seasons ago- with maintenance coats this 2023 off-season. She enjoys professional service and a high caliber of annual maintenance. This vessel just underwent a significant investment/ update this 2023 off-season: a NEW set of Garmin marine electronics! This brings her to a NEMA 2000 backbone (an easy set-up to make any desired system additions to), singular thru-hull (the previous system required two, the second was omitted, and properly glassed over), two new data read-out screens were installed, replacing the previous circular displays- to either side of her companionway and a NEW Garmin windex for the top of her mast.Ã? The mast is currently also in rack storage with Portland Yacht Services.Ã?Â
The quality of construction and attention to finish detail from Sabre are well above those of the typical production boats of the time that were aimed at first-time boat buyers..Ã? the Mk III version utilized vinylester resin for exterior coats and is thus less susceptible to blistering.Ã? The Sabre 30 features a deck-stepped mast, stainless steel bow and stern pulpits, a comfortable cockpit and a spacious and flexible interior layout.Ã?Â
Her sails and dodger are washed, serviced and stored each season at a local sail loft. Those inventory items can be returned to the vessel in advance of any pre-purchase inspection and will be aboard in time for Spring commissioning.Ã?Â
ON DECK:Starting at her bow, SPIRIT is equipped with a stainless steel bow pulpit with integrated navigation light, an anchor roller and keeper, and large bow chalks. There is a small locker on the foredeck for storage of her ground tackle. Her decks are two-tone: tan nonskid with white waterways. Her exterior brightwork is in great shape- wooded and varnish re-done, two seasons ago.Ã?Â
Her cabin top has two sets of dorade vents and two large, overhead, opening hatches- one forward and one aft of the deck-stepped mast, and four opening ports in the cabin sides..Ã? Side decks on the Sabre 30 are wide enough to allow for easy passage from the foredeck to the cockpit, and rigging shrouds are inboard to allow the genoa to be sheeted inside the lifelines.Ã? Her headsail tracks run from just aft of her chainplates to nearly her cockpit. Her rig, though original, shows very few signs of wear. Handrails run the length to her cockpit for an extra safe and secure journey to and from her fore decks. Her double lifelines are coated in white. Currently, her boom is stored on-deck for the offseason. Her chainplates are easily inspected with great access from above and below.Ã?Â
SPIRIT is equipped with a canvas dodger. Her running rigging has been updated regularly.Ã? Proceeding aft to her cockpit, SPIRIT opens to a comfortable and spacious arena for sailing and entertaining guests;Ã? The Sabre 30 boasts a six foot and nine-inch-long cockpit which comfortably accommodates three or four adults in a mushroom arrangement around a pedestal-mounted wheel. Her helm pedestal is adorned with teak, varnished cup holders, a dome / binnacle compass and her throttle controls. To port is her engine panel. Full service records for her Westerbeke, inboard Diesel engine are available upon request from her listing broker.Ã? Ã?Â
Thereââ?¬â?¢s a deep storage locker within the port cockpit settee and a more shallow locker to starboard (this affords SPIRIT her quarter berth space below deck). A set of marine electronics surround her companionway - NEW this 2023 off-season!Ã?Â
At her transom, to port is an outboard engine bracket and to starboard is a radar mast with dome above. Centerline is a transom mounted swim ladder.Ã?Â
BELOW DECK:Descending down her companionway ladder, youââ?¬â?¢re stepping down ladder/ staircase comprised of an integrated rubbish bin and set of storage drawers. To starboard is her Navigation Station. Flip-top table provides ample working and storage space, dedicated working light and bank of storage drawers below. The navigators seat doubles as the head of the quarter berth. This Quarter Berth is appointed with itââ?¬â?¢s own operational hatch for natural light and ventilation. All soft goods below are original and in very well maintained status; theyââ?¬â?¢re a open weave marine fabric in a neutral/ taupe color.Ã?Â
Facing aft, the vesselââ?¬â?¢s Galley runs awthartships and to port. The Galley is equipped with a stainless steel sink, gas stove with oven, ample storage outboard and below, deep ice box, and flip-top extension for additional working counter space at the leading edge of the port settee.Ã?Â
Her engine access is reasonably good and her engine compartment is insulated in an effort to reduce noise while underway under power. Her fuel capacity is 20 gallons (which is often supplemented with jerry cans on deck by "serious cruisers"... Her Seller has found the manufacturer provided range to be more than adequate for most cases endeavors).Ã?Â
Proceeding forward, SPIRIT opens to a flexible salon layout. Thereââ?¬â?¢s settee seating for six, a flip down and expandable table mounted to her bulkhead, and storage outboard behind sliders and behind her settee backrest cushions. The port settee easily expands to provide a double berth- making the sleeping capacity aboard this 30ft sailing vessel an impressive seven persons. Overhead is a large opening hatch for natural light and ventilation. Each operating port has a dedicated screen and her fixed ports are equipped with drop down shades for privacy and protection from the sun.Ã?Â
Forward of the salon is the vesselââ?¬â?¢s hanging locker, to starboard; to port is her head compartment. Her Head includes a vanity with storage, mirror and sink, marine toilet and additional storage outboard. The sink faucet doubles as a shower when extended and hung above. The compartment is appointed with a drain for ease of use of this ââ?¬Å?wet headââ?¬ï¿½ configuration.Ã?Â
Her foremost cabin includes a double V-Berth: two full length bins, two drawers and four storage lockers. There are dedicated reading lights to either side of the berth and storage below the berth cushions. Her V-Berth insert cushion rests atop a bi-folded insert, which easily stows in the hanging locker just aft of this forward cabin. Overhead is a second large opening hatch.Ã?Â
Her cabin sole and interior soft goods are original, show decently, and have a good deal of life left in them. Great care and keeping has gone into SPIRIT. Her Seller, as her second owner, has cared and maintained her with top-of-the-line annual service and a great deal of adoration for her. She's an incredibly well preserved and clean example of the Sabre 30.Ã?Â
