Respite's History
Every boat has a story. And it is that story which differentiates one boat from another as it reveals the character and quality of the vessel and its owners. The story of this boat begins with a well thought out and innovative design by Ted Hood and Dieter Empacher. They set out to design and build a well built safe versatile cruising sailboat that had generous accommodation, was easily handled, and with a turn of speed not usually found on a heavy displacement boat. And they did this so successfully that their Bristol's set a standard that spawned many imitators.
The story of Respite begins with its original owner who ordered the boat to be highly upgraded and customized for extensive cruising in a variety of climates and places. He added to the standard boat a long list of extras to ready the boat for his use. Among them a larger engine, larger primary and secondary winches, outboard Genoa track, higher and wider toe rails, push pit boarding ladder, electric stove, extra cleats, teak rub rail, a washer and dryer, Hood main electric furling, additional dorades and extra sails. The entire list included over forty items. The electronics that were then added were the state of the art in the pre-digital world. Bountifully equipped, it took its owners in speed and comfort anywhere they wished. That they did for twelve years until a new owner appeared.
The new owner came with a new agenda ââ?¬â?? to improve and update all of the boats systems and bring it to up to date while improving its level of quality. For this he chose the Burr Brothers yard in Marion MA. So the work began ââ?¬â?? among it was stainless steel Hood ports and hatches that replaced the older aluminum ones ââ?¬â?? a bow thruster was added ââ?¬â?? fuel and water tanks were replaced as needed ââ?¬â?? a holding tank system was installed ââ?¬â?? all the head fixtures were replaced ââ?¬â?? new cushion covers ââ?¬â?? new sails ââ?¬â?? new dorades ââ?¬â?? new traveler ââ?¬â??new stove ââ?¬â?? washer and dryer eliminated -a fantastic awlgrip job ââ?¬â?? new electronics ââ?¬â?? a built in PC ââ?¬â?? rebuilding of furling and windlass motors and a new anchor chain, among others. The yacht was elevated to a condition that far surpassed its peers and other high end boats of a similar vintage. After a few years of low usage the owner, not an experienced sailor, decided that he preferred a power boat and put the boat up for sale.
In 1996 the current owners, an architect couple with boating and marine design experience, began a search for a boat to meet their cruising aspirations for their forthcoming retirement. They were prior owners of a Hinckley and a LeComte and began searching for a new boat to be based in Camden Maine. They scrutinized Hinckley's, Little Harbors, Alden's, and Sequins. They saw both the good and bad in each but none that balanced accommodation, ease of handling, simplicity of maintenance, and sailing ability as well as the Bristol. After looking at numerous 45.5s and 47s they found what now is Respite. The boat was priced at the top of its market but its genuine value well exceeded those of the competing Bristol's. It was not a difficult decision.
And so began 22 years of joyful and rewarding voyaging, occasionally going south, but mostly on the Maine coast, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Destinations as St Andrews, the St John River, and Halifax were common. The trips were easily handled by two people but often taken with friends and family. With company on board, the benefits of two private staterooms cannot be overstated. Be it the joy of on a sunny day reaching through Mt Desert Island to Roque, or cutting through days of pea soup fogs armed with the best equipment, Respite has proven it can do it all.
There is an important reason that the boat consistently does so well. Each season the boat is stored, usually indoors, only at quality boatyards as Wayfarer Marine or Johanson Boatworks. Each year it is inspected and whatever has to be done to keep the boat in fine condition is done. At the same time Respite has been continuously upgraded and improved, as can be seen in the detailed listing and the comments from a recent survey. For those seriously interested in this boat, available is the two year old survey, recent yard bills, and access to talk with the maintaining yard and its knowledgeable mechanics.

Surveyor's Comments "The value of this vessel was determined using a market comparison approach. At the time of survey, the following sister ships were found for sale with reputable brokerages: a 1982 model for $169,000, 1984 model for $149,900, 1989 model for $170,000, and a 1990 model for $225,000. In addition, there are several other vessels on the market that are similar in age, size, and equipment: 1985 Cambria 46 for $195,000, a 1983 Sequin 44 for $215,000 and a 1985 Swan 46 for $199,000.
RESPITE shows very good maintenance and recent upgrades. The interior is in very good condition. This vessel is likely in better condition that any of the sister ships or comparable vessels listed above." ~ October 2016 Comments from survey made by Joseph Lobley, AMS
