A truly unique and special vessel that Ekberg Yachting is excited to bring to the market, the Hallett 33 'Family Wagon' is a custom, one-off racing yacht that was designed and built in the state of Maine. The third custom boat built for a talented and experienced owner, 'Family Wagon' was designed to look and feel as good as she performs. With a stunning custom interior and exterior, and a tasteful layout, this one-off Hallett 33 ticks the boxes as both a racer and a cruiser designed and built for one purpose; fun on the water with loved ones. A cold-molded boat built of cedar skins on either side of a foam core, 'Family Wagon' is by definition a wooden boat and is thus legal for the famous Eggemoggin Reach Regatta.
Based on the GP33 box rule and designed by naval architect Sean Fawcett, 'Family Wagon' was built by famed wooden boat builder Brion Reiff in Brooklin, Maine. A modern classic that could tick off Category 1 ocean races and win local beer can races, 'Family Wagon' was has been extensively updated during her life time and has only been very lightly used since her last major re-fit in 2019. In 2019, she received a new aluminum Selden mast. The boat still has the original carbon boom, in good shape. Owned by a professional sailmaker, the new rig paved the way for an all-new sail inventory, alongside an update to a custom retractable bow-sprit and the move to all assymetrical spinnakers. (The boat originally had a huge spinnaker pole and symmetrical kites). At the same time, the cockpit was significantly updated and opened up even further, to enable a more modern, open feel and again, more family fun. The keel was also updated to a new, deeper keel fin. The old 't-bulb' setup proved to be prone to catching lobster traps while racing in Maine, so the new setup reflects more of an 'L-shape' to address this.
Stored for the past four years on her roadworthy double-axle trailer, 'Family Wagon' represents a unique opportunity to purchase a truly unique, modern, fast boat for an incredible value. Owned by legendary local sailmaker Richard Hallett, Family Wagon was the third in a line of boats that Richard custom built to win races. An overall winner of Key West Race Week on his old 27 footer back in the '90s, this latest family wagon is a boat that was designed and built to a storied pedigree that has created a boat that can sail well to her rating and give you a chance to win any race on any race course between here and Bermuda, the Great Lakes or even California to Hawii.
With an 8-foot bulb keel and a lot of stability, 'Family Wagon's hard chine design allows her to excel in a wide variety of conditions. At only 9'10 inches wide and with a lot of horsepower from her generous sail plan - combined with a very light weight of 4,630 pounds - 'Family Wagon' is powered up and easily driven both upwind and down, while also being wicked fast on a reach when she can lean on that deep keel and accelerate forwards. With proper crew weight on the rail and when well sailed, she has no problem sailing to her New England PHRF rating of 75. With her inboard diesel, huge cockpit and attractive, usable interior she can also be sailed as a super fun and high performance day sailer or cruiser. While a head is not currently installed to reduce weight for racing, the boat used to have a head and one could be very easily added by the new owner. This boat would be perfect for a local owner, or an out-of-towner who wanted to show up and tow 'Family Wagon' to the starting line of a Mac race, South Florida or the starting line of the Transpac.
