Freedom Yachts Information
Freedom Yachts is the builder of Freedom sailboats and Legacy power yachts. Freedom sailboats are built with unstayed rigs, which means that the mast is freestanding on it's own without the support of standing rigging wires. Garry Hoyt, a champion sailor who founded Freedom Yachts in 1976, created the unstayed rigs to give "freedom" from the inefficient sail shapes of traditional sloop rigs. The design also gives "freedom" from the compression and maintenance issues associated with standing rigging. The sailboat's masts are made of carbon fiber and positioned well forward on the boat allowing for most of the sail area to be contained in the mainsail.
The first boat designed and built by Gary Hoyt for Freedom Yachts was the Freedom 40, a cat ketch that successfully proved that free standing spars were possible for large ocen going yachts. Of the several models to follow, the F-32 and F-44 were especially notable for winning the Bermuda One-Two Regatta.
Mr Hoyt sold the company in 1985 to Tillotson-Pearson who continued to build boats with designer Gary Mull until the company was once again sold off in the mid 90's. Today, the company that owns the Freedom Yachts name is building only Legacy power yachts.
