If you have the opportunity, visit the San Diego Historical Society web site and read their article on the history of yachts and boats in San Diego. In their article "YACHTING: Its History In San Diego" they describe "San Diego's link with the sea has been continuous since its founding, and while boats and ships have been important throughout its history as a means of trade and transportation, for military purposes and in the fishing industry, it was not until 1852 that an organized yacht club was formed for the purpose of boating for pleasure. On March 16, 1852, the first local yacht club, the Pacific Pioneer Yacht Club, was founded. According to the San Diego Herald there were fifteen members, seven of whom were United States military officers, with a variety of sizes of sloops and schooners."
San Diego has many marinas, both commercial and private, that allow individuals who do not own their own boat, yacht or sailboat to rent or charter boats and yachts by the hour or by the day. Thousands of boaters are attracted year round to San Diego Bay and Mission Bay Aquatic Park areas purely for the boating, sailing and yachting activities. San Diego has invested the boaters dollars wisley by creating many public access launch ramps where interested boaters can launch their watercraft.
