Rhodes Sailboats Information

Rhodes Sailboats are the namesake of legendary designer Philip Rhodes. Rhodes career in sailboat design spanned more than 50 years and produced models ranging from 7' dinghies to luxurious 123' motor sailers as well as commercial craft. Rhodes designs were sought after by some of the biggest names of his time such as the Rockefellers and Sears and Roebuck.

One of Rhodes Yachts most famous designs, the 12 Meter Wheatherly, was the winner of the America's Cup in 1962. Another one of his designs, built for Coleman Plastics in 1965, the Bounty II, was one of the earliest yachts built of fiberglass. Bounty II helped prove the viability of fiberglass for larger vessels and also earned Rhodes the recognition of being a pioneer in fiberglass boat construction.

Rhodes spent most of his time managing a large design firm while James McCurdy headed yacht design for the sailboat division. All of the designs were held to specific formulas and guidelines that were developed by Rhodes in earlier years. As the years progressed, much of the new designs were developed by Rhodes' son Bodie.

In 1968, Bodie Rhodes and Jim McCurdy struck out on their own with a yacht design company and continued the Rhodes design for Seafarer Yachts.
