Jeanneau Sailboats Information

Jeanneau Sailboats founder, Henri Jeanneau, did not set out to build sailboats in the beginning. Henri had a passion for planes and automobiles. A passion that grew to include powerboats back in 1957 after simply seeing one pass by his window. With his interest piqued, Jeanneau began construction of a wooden hull with which he could participate in the 6-hour Paris race. Jeanneau not only competed in the 6-hour race, which was touted as the largest national race at the time, he was the first to finish. By 1959, he had hired several apprentice canoe builders and so began the Jeanneau shipyards.

Jeanneau introduced his first fiberglass boat in 1961. The initial build still featured the lines of a frigate and retained the wooden deck and the fiberglass was molded onto a wooden hull. However, later that year, a new all-fiberglass boat was unveiled. From this single mold, hundreds of hulls could be created with relative ease. This was the beginning of a whole new era for Jeanneau as over 1500 powerboats of each series were built and sold, leading up to the first in a range of great motor yachts, the Imperator 900, in 1966.

Jeanneau Sailboats The first Jeanneau sailboat was launched in 1964 as the boating world began it's love affair with pleasure cruising. By the late 60's, cruising sailboats were in high demand and with new technological advancements lowering production costs, they were readily accessible to the mainstream sailor.

In 1970 Jeanneau released the Sangria line of sailboats to an eager generation of pleasure cruisers. The Sangria model sold over 2700 boats and was responsible for launching Jeanneau to the top of the industry in the design and construction of cruising sailboats.

For the past 45 years Jeanneau has proven their philosophy of finding the balance between innovative technologies and time-tested traditional craftsmanship. The result of their unique approach to boat building in the modern world is an extensive range of sailboats that unfailingly meet the diverse needs of their clients.

While maintaining important elements of their traditional heritage, Jeanneau has masterfully incorporated modern production techniques such as computer-aided design, automated varnish application and computerized table saws. This innovative technology enables Jeanneau to produce better, more reliable boats than ever before.
