Why was the starboard engine replaced? "When the boat was purchased, the starboard engine was smoking more than we liked. We thought that by rebuilding the injector pump, installing new injectors, overhauling the turbocharger and after cooler, thoroughly cleaning the heat exchanger core and cleaning the exhaust manifold that the problem could be fixed. Realizing that it did not the heads on the starboard engine were removed and rebuilt, but examining all of the cylinders during the head rebuilding, it was discovered that there was a leak in the head gasket that had allowed water into two of the cylinders causing pitting and scoring of the cylinder walls. Once this was realized Milton Cat in Maine replaced the engine block with a new short block.
The new engine was assembled by Johanson Boatworks in Rockland, ME, using all new, rebuilt or reconditioned parts from the old engine. The job was performed when the old engine had 2150 hours on it. It now has approximately 80 hours on it since the new block was installed. It is running beautifully and meets all factory defined specs.
In summary, the starboard engine is a reconditioned short block by Cat that comes with new pistons, rings, connecting rods and bearings, timing chain, crank shaft and bearings, etc. It also has new injectors, rebuilt heads and valves, reconditioned heat exchanger core, reconditioned turbo, rebuilt injection pump, cleaned and reconditioned after cooler, rebuilt torque dampener, all new oil and water hoses and pipes and new engine mounts" ~ Current Owners of Quartet
