"Morningstar" has been campaigned in Maine for the last 15 years or so, spending the summers Downeast, then cruising South, most often to the Bahamas in a manner that I always admired. They took their time, very often as much as several months touring, exploring, visiting friends along the way, including my wife and I at Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. We had the good fortune to cruise on "Morningstar" to Roque Island in Maine and again to Pettit Manan to view Puffins. The Captain, Norman Sanborn was a dear friend of mine and I would visit him on the boat, work with him, and learn about what a great boat "Morningstar" is. Captain Norman was a consummate waterman, never forgetting his Maine Lobsterman background, a professional captain, so we would compare notes, help each other with problems, spend a lot of time in small boats around the Cranberry Islands in Maine, and socializing. We, on occasion, got a chance to cruise with the boat transiting North and South, as we were often delivering Hatteras Yachts. It became clear, even before the extraordinary refit that quintupled the horsepower changing "Morningstar" to a semi-displacement vessel, that this vessel is a sea kindly vessel, a gentle ride, easy to move around on with large side decks and a center walk thru below, a voluminous fly bridge, and a settee in the pilot house.
"Morningstar" is now in Chesapeake, Va in fresh water awaiting her next adventure.
MORNING STAR under went a full one year refit in 2000 at the Hinckley Yard in Maine. During this time both engines were removed and replaced along with the transmissions. The vessel's plywood and teak decks were removed and also replaced along with some of the insides of the bulwarks. All windows were removed and replaced. On the interior, the carpet was replaced as well as numerous appointments including all countertops. the pilothouse saw a major upgrade in electronics and all the wiring in the engine rooms were replaced along with new sound insulation. The watermaker was also new at this time as well as the yacht's air conditioning. Overall, more than $1,200,000 was spent. MORNING STAR is a very unique yacht with the interior volume feeling more like an 85 footer compared to a 65 footer. She is in excellent condition, having been professionally maintained by her second long term owner. She offers tremendous range and sea keeping abilities. A perfect yacht for those seeking a safe long range cruiser capable of making it in and out of the smallest of harbors and coves. A truly special offering.
