-- DESCRIPTION --
Since the first one was launched in 1978, the Southerly line of British-built world cruisers has earned a well-deserved reputation for handsome and rugged yachts with a trick up their sleeve -- the ability to switch, in as little as a minute, from deep draft passagemaker to shoal draft gunkholer. With a simple push of a button, the 2,310-pound keel on this 35-footer retracts, courtesy of a hydraulic ram, and draft goes from 7 feet, 2 inches to just 2 feet, 4 inches. This ability to deliver both precise directional stability and powerful windward performance with the keel down and access to shallow lagoons and inland waterways with the keel up makes the Southerly ideally suited to East Coast sailors intent on cruising Florida and the Bahamas. A 4,455-pound steel grounding plate forms the keel box into which the keel is lifted, providing massive protection and permitting the boat to be beached in tidal harbors without harming the hull or the twin rudders, which are canted to further avoid any grounding damage. This Southerly is nicely equipped, with a tall mast option, American cherry interior, two reverse-cycle air conditioning units, bowthruster, Frigoboat keel-cooled refrigeration, full electronics, including radar, and a distinctive light blue hull.
Accommodations
Light floods the stunning interior of the Southerly 110, courtesy of large coachroof portlights -- three forward and two to either side. A raised floor in the galley and step-up nav station areas creates a "deck salon" feel, putting occupants at eye level with the portlights. A step-down leads into the salon where a large U-shaped settee to port provides comfortable seating around the dining table, which lowers to create a double berth with the addition of a dedicated cushion. Opposite to starboard is another settee, which can also be used as a berth. The forward cabin sports a pullman-style berth that widens to a double quarter berth. Access to the aft owner's cabin can be gained through the its own doorway via the galley or through a private door in the head compartment. The aft stateroom is spacious, offering its occupants a desk and vanity as well as Queen-sized sleeping, along with ample storage.
