| -- DESCRIPTION -- |
The owners of "Ondine" want their B40 to be the next sold and offer a wave-making 50k Springtime price reduction to encourage offers. "Ondine" is hull #172 built for the 1980 Model Year. She is a very special yacht with a custom interior and owners who have been for ten years passionately devoted to her upkeep. They intend to turn "Ondine" over to new owners with all systems operational and the boat in pristine condition. She has repeatedly returned to the factory for care and upgrades such as installation of a U-shaped dinette to compliment the classic interior that is varnished mahogany. The dinette converts to a guest double berth and is served by a custom drop leaf table. She also returned to Southwest Harbor for re-finishing of the original gel-coat and Flag Blue Awlgripp. The original owner configured the boat for short-handed sailing with an electric Stowaway Mast System,two-speed electric Barient primary winches, and a centerboard operated by an electrically driven worm gear.
Some would opine that the day of the classic yacht has come and gone. I disagree and suggest that you go for a sail on a Bermuda 40 prior to purchasing a more modern boat. |
| Accommodations |
The interior is finished in varnished Honduras Mahogany complemented with a gloss teak&holly sole. The interior finish appears largely original and nicely intact. There is plenty of light and ventilation from two overhead hatches and numerous opening ports throughout with screens and two chrome dorade vents. The ports have all been painted and re bedded in 2005. There are a half dozen opening ports (Hinckly fabricated and installed) that would typically not be seen on a Bermuda 40....
The Upholstery is tasteful; Jade green Ultra Suede with blue piping and white curtains with blue ribbon stripes on tracks.
Forward is the Master Stateroom with "V" berths, 6" foam mattresses and a seat between. It is ventilated by an overhead hatch and lit with brass Frigast lights. There is ample stowage in a bureau and below the "V". There are bookshelves outboard. To starboard is a hanging locker w/ shelf. This cabin is lovely in it's simplicity!
In the bow is access to the chain locker in the fore peak, divided for chain and rode with shelves over and outboard. There is a full length door that separates the forward cabin from the balance of the boats interior.
The Head Compartment is forward to Port with a stainless steel sink with hot and cold pressure water and rebuilt Wilcox-Crittendon(08)head. There is a medicine cabinet, hamper, and linen locker. This compartment is ventilated by a large dorade.
The Main salon has a Hinckley installed
dinette to port (convertible to a double guest berth) and a custom drop leaf table that is large enough to serve both the dinette and the opposing settee. Storage is provided by six drawers under the pilot and transom berth and bin storage under the dinette.
The Galley is full-width (aft)with Formica counter tops and a built-in dust panin the galley sole. To port is a gimballed 3-burner Shipmate propane stove with oven and broiler, double stainless sinks close to center line with hot/cold pressure water, and storage lockers outboard and aft. To Stbd is a Grunert refrigeration and deep freeze with work surfaces.

"Ondine" is a mythical water nymph or water spirit, the elemental of water.
Quoting Jack Horner:
"The Bermuda 40 is the quintessential example of Bill Tripp's masterful eye for near perfect balance. I think it can be safely said that this boat has stood the test of time, and although the design is now over 40 years old, many people still consider the Bermuda 40 one of the most beautiful yachts afloat. Henry R. Hinckley&Co. began production of the Bermuda 40 in 1959. Over 200 Bermuda 40's have been built to date."
This broker had the pleasure of visiting the Bermuda 40 fleet celebrating their 50th anniversary this summer. In attendance were both hull#1 and hull#203, the bookends to a great run of boats. The dedication of these owner's to their classic boats is inspiring. When sailing to the anniversery event, I was amazed at how easily we were able to aproach the boats hull speed in about 14 to 16 knots of true wind. The B40 sails through the water beautifully and quietly! Avid Bermuda40 sailor's will frequently adjust the centerboard depending on wind angle/strength and sea state. This is no easy board to move as she is a heavy bronze (shaped)blade. The helmsman on Ondine can do so at will via centerboard (electric) controls within easy reach. It should also be noted that this board does not have a vulnerable cable that could fail at grounding. Rather it is engineered to unload the entire mechanism if the board should touch bottom.
